January 2, 10-day Itinerary

Hi Grettel. Scott and I wanted to thank you and all the people at Aventuras Naturales for a spectacular 10 Day Adventure Trip in your beautiful country. You and the staff at Aventuras Naturales really planned all of the details to make the trip a memorable experience. The tour guides Carlos and Kevin on the Pacuare River were wonderful and they also helped to make the stay at the Pacuare Lodge an unparalleled experience. We loved the Whitewater river rafting as well as the Canopy Tour. The food that Thomas, your chef, prepared was spectacular. We couldn't believe how romantic the honeymoon suite was even without electricity and hot water. Our trip to Arenal included both horseback riding which we booked through the hotel and the bike tour. Alex was our guide on the horseback riding tour and it was just magnificent seeing the volcano erupt. We were lucky that day since the weather was clear and we could see the volcano. Although the bike tour was a challenge in the rain, we enjoyed it nonetheless. Monteverde was just beautiful and the guided tour to Selvatura Cloud Forest was quite an experience. All of the drivers were wonderful and the accommodations at the Montana de Fuego and El Establo were beautiful and cozy. Scott and I both indulged ourselves and got Siamese massages at the En Gadi Spa at Montana de Fuego which were extremely luxurious and relaxing after our 3 hour horseback ride around the Arenal volcano. And of course, Tamarindo Beach and the Hotel Cala Luna were terrific as well. We enjoyed the boat ride in Tortuguero even thought Scott and I were not feeling well that day and there was some confusion regarding this trip but it all worked out in the end thanks to your efforts to make our visit and our honeymoon an unforgettable and wonderful experience. We recommend your company to anyone who wants to travel around Costa Rica and we are sure to visit your country again soon. We told our clients in Costa Rica about your company and they were glad to hear we were so pleased. Thanks again for making our honeymoon trip such a wonderful experience.

Hello Ana Maria,

I know some time has passed since my trip to Costa Rica in December, but I wanted to take the time and write to you about my wonderful vacation.

I never imagined seeing and experiencing so many colorful butterflies, birds, hummingbirds, frogs, flowers, and even a dragonfly. The wildlife and rainforests were just amazing. The food was wonderful as well, as were the amenities. Lastly, but equally important, the Costa Rican people were warm and friendly.

Thank you for taking the time to customize my trip with such short notice. I realize that most vacationers plan an international trip, many months or even years in advance and not weeks, like in my case. Unfortunately, I was scheduled to go else where with a friend, until they canceled. With the priorities of work and school, specifically final exams, I lost time, and decided to Costa Rica instead.

Your knowledge of your country has paid off, in the places that I visited and experienced. Hotel Bosque del Cabo was amazingly tranquil, even with the early morning howler monkeys wake up calls. I particularly enjoyed the four-wheel drive to get there. Selva Bananito Lodge provided a wonderful adventure, with the tree climbing and zip lines. The waterway surrounding at Mawamba Lodge (my last stop) were wonderful, as was the lodge. Lastly, I finally got to see two sloths in the Tortuguero canals, till then, I had not spotted any.

Lastly from the limited correspondence we had, you managed to plan an amazing experience that I will always remember. Hopefully, sometime in the future, I will be able to return to Tortuguero and experience ocean turtles laying their eggs.

Dear Ana Maria,

I just wanted to write to tell you just how much we enjoyed rafting on the Pacuare river during our trip to Costa Rica over the last two weeks.

I did not have enough time to really write as much as I wanted to on the evaluation form, and was hoping to convey a few more thoughts to you by email, and trust they will be relayed to the proper people who would normally be reading the feedback.

I cannot say enough about our guide, Louis Achoy. We enjoyed his company immensely, and he was not only an amazing raft guide, but was great on the canopy tour, trails through the woods, etc. He was funny, personable, and very knowledgeable. Just to give you one of several possible examples: he realized that the people in the group he was guiding (there were 5 of us) had a high interest in nature and wildlife (there were two naturalists in the group). He took every opportunity to point out various wildlife forms we would encounter, and surprised us by guiding our raft to shore, disappearing in the woods for a moment, only to return with a red frog that he captured for us to see. He seemed to do things like that because he truly enjoyed it, not because it was "just his job". Likewise, he was an amazing waiter at the Pacuare Lodge and during lunch on the river. If anything, my wife and I were a little taken back by the high level of service we received. We felt like we were being treated like royalty, and we are such simple people, it was almost a little uncomfortable for us. We would actually have preferred to eat with Louis and the other people working at the lodge, rather than us being treated in a special fashion. I don't really mean those comments as criticism, just that we are not the kind of people that are used to being waited on like that, and prefer that all people be treated equally. Anyway, we just wanted to make sure that Louis got the recognition we feel he deserved, he was exceptional in every aspect of his interaction with us. We always felt safe (rafting and canopy tour), and thoroughly enjoyed his company, humor, and companionship.

The Pacuare Lodge was an amazing place to stay as well. All of the people we met were just so wonderful, and seemed to be experts in everything they did (and they all wore many hats, doing many different jobs). The honeymoon bungalow was especially nice, and it was just an incredible place to stay while there.

Again, I hope you don't mind these extra comments, and can pass them along to whomever should see them. I honestly can't think of a single thing that I would like to have been different during those two days, and your company should be commended for its excellent service.

Professional staff, good lunch (especially the crackers), the instructions at the beginning were very helpful. I enjoyed floating in the water under the foot bridge. Dear Grettel,

We have been home over one week now and it is hard to believe what an incredible country you have. I realize that we only saw a small part of it and an incredibly exclusive part, but, it was such an amazing visit. I only regret that it was so short a visit; at least we will have an excuse to return. the Osa peninsula was so breathtakingly beautiful and unspoiled. Having the dolphins swim with our boat to Caño Island , snorkeling with schools of fish in warm clear turquoise water,

and hiking through parts of the rain forest in Corcovado was overwhelmingly beautiful. Our insect tour at Aguila de Osa at night was not to be forgotten.

We all had a fantastic time and it was in no small part thanks to your assistance with the arrangements. even when we went to the wrong airport on the Osa peninsula, the lady was able to have the plane pick us up at the other location. It would not happen in this country in a million years. Our pilot for the flight from north to south was experienced and calm and got us there safely. We were picked up on time and with courtesy throughout. It was a very special trip and we thank you for helping us plan it.

Word of mouth is the best reference. So, please know that as the opportunity arises, we will refer people to you. Thank you again for making our trip so pleasant.

HI everyone. We have been hawing quite an adventure here. Monkeys stealing bananas from the locals at Manuel Antonio National Park . Pristine beaches with warm water. Josh learned to swim! We saw Olive Ridley turtles nest and we got to hold the eggs. Saw them drop in the sand 80 to 110 at a time. It was a lightening filled night with no moon so it was very exciting. We have seen Arenal Volcano erupt during a lighting storm while we dined by candles at an open air type restaurant. We saw all kinds of frogs red blue poisonous! We went horse back riding up the volcano and to the waterfalls in La Fortuna. Thank you Grettel for your wonderful assistance in making our trip a adventure of a lifetime.

The rafting trip and honeymoon bungalow were perfect and the best highlight of the trip! Dear Grettel, Mark and I just returned home and we had to let you know that

our rafting trip and stay at the lodge was the highlight of our trip. The

honeymoon suite, food and scenery were outstanding, but what we remember

most are the staff and guides. Not only was Jorge's cooking extraordinary,

he took the time and effort to communicate how he prepared the meals so that

I might try them at home. Jose's rafting skills on the water were superb.

He explained the technical aspects of coursing through the rapids all while

keeping us in stitches with his wit and humor. As for Jose Reese, stoic,

calm and steady...we ask that you try to make sure he is home by 2:00 as he

is an engaged man now!! Finally, we remember Esdras as the most beneficial

employee with your company. We recommend you give him a raise...he is worth

it!! His knowledge of the local flora and wildlife taught us a greater appreciation of the wonders of the jungle. He served as translator with the local employees who taught us much of how the lodge was run and maintained.

What a wonderful learning experience, we can't wait to come back!!!

Saludos desde Chicago ! I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your kind hospitality at Pacuare Lodge from October 28-31. My husband and I were extremely impressed with the lodge, the setting, the river, and most of all with the quality of the people we encountered along the way.

Kurt Studt was a wonderful guide – his knowledge of the outdoors and his love of interaction with people made the forest come alive. When I told him I hadn’t seen any frogs or toads, he immediately found several along our hike to the Cabecar families. He coached us on class 4 rapids, helping us to understand what we would find on the final day of our experience. He gave us tremendous insight into life in Costa Rica , answering all my questions about culture, customs and people very patiently! What a fabulous person and resource.

Coqui and Rosa were another highlight, and given their mastery in the kitchen, one would never have known the regular chef was not in residence if someone hadn’t told us. They were lovely people, and even with all our exercise I am sure we managed to gain weight.

The canopy crew, at the lodge for the construction of the canopy tour, were a lot of fun to meet. Special thanks to Luis and Ronald for their patience with us on the zip lines and platforms, especially since my husband is afraid of heights.

Alex was our rafting guide on day 3 – his energy, enthusiasm and sense of humor had us laughing the whole way, while learning from his insight and knowledge of the river and the forest around it. We really enjoyed his company.

I’m sure there are many others to thank as well (Grettel, Laura, the drivers...) – Aventuras Naturales runs a very efficient operation that we will certainly recommend to all our honeymooners going forward. I can’t say enough good things about our experiences over the 3 day trip; only that we are so thankful for your kind invitation and for the memories we have as a result.

Ana Maria --I meant to write sooner and intend to write more, but we wanted you

to know now, not later, that we had a GREAT trip during our two weeks in Costa

Rica --thanks for the itinerary that you assembled for us --it was splendid.

There was nothing that disappointed us. I guess if I were to name a highlight,

it would be the stay at Casa Corcovado for there we were able to experience

Corcovado and its wildlife and plantlife --and we were also able to kayak and

snorkel and relax on the beach...it was a great four days. However, we enjoyed

it all, the Pacuare River Adventure, our nights and days in San Jose , Arenal

volcano --and we saw it plenty during our days there, horseback riding there,

and Monteverde, canopy walk and all! You put together a great trip for

Between the rollicking rapids of this country’s most beautiful river, on the long calm stretches coursing through lush canyons, the scenery and serenity are almost dreamlike.

Laughter and screams that fill the air as the rafts tumble and twirl through the turbulent zones give way to a collective hush, during which you are left in awe, compelled simply to look and listen.

You tune to the sound of water rushing from the mountains to the Caribbean Sea , and to the chirping and whistling of birds deep in the jungle.

This small Central American nation, sandwiched between Nicaragua and Panama , has 850 species of birds – and you seem to be among them all.

A tiger heron tries to blend into the bank, striking a statuesque pose as it waits to pluck an unsuspecting fish from the river.

The pendulous Montezuma oropendolas form colonies in the branches of tall trees. The brightly colored birds are darting from tree to tree, nest to nest.

The Female of this species chooses her mate based on the size and safety of his nest, your guide, Andres Vargas Sanchez, says, pointing above the trees to one of many enemies of the oropendolas, a large-beaked toucan, jokingly referred to as “that Froot Loop guy” in flight over the river. Onward you go, charging through rapids one minute, looking for monkeys the next, immersed in a universe so vibrant and green that you can hardly believe your eyes.

The overnight Pacuare rafting trip was great! My partner and I really enjoyed the new honeymoon suite. Waking up to the sounds of all those birds was a rare treat.

The entire trip was a success. The river was clear and beautiful, the guides were helpful (and humorous!) and dinner was unexpectedly exquisite. My only complaint is that your website does not really reflect the absolutely fantastic experience of the overnight Pacuare trip. The time passed far too quickly. If we had known, we definitely would have booked the three-day excursion so we could have enjoyed another day at the Pacuare Lodge before continuing on down the river.

Next time, I guess. Until then, keep up the excellent work!

Dear Grettel,

Donna and I wanted to take this opportunity to write and thank you for the great job you did in arranging our first trip to Costa Rica , and the tremendous job Adventuras Naturales did in making our trip a very special one. From the minute we arrived in San Jose ( 11:56 PM ) to the final pickup to return to the airport for our trip home everything was perfect. Everyone involved should be commended on the professionalism of your company. We especially enjoyed the river rafting and the canopy tour. WOW! The hike was a little arduous but we got through it ok. The hotel Tabacon was a real treat after spending a few days in the jungle and we took advantage of the hot springs to sooth our aching bonesJ. We enjoyed the hotel Capitan El Suizo in Tamarindo, but due to our short stay there we probably would have preferred an extra day at the Tabacon.

Please say hi to Alejandro, Macho, Harry, Mario, Fernando, Tomas, and all the rest of the gang. They’re all great guys. Our mailing address is listed below for the flight refund. We wound up sharing a van with another couple to get back to San Jose that night. It was a long trip but it worked out ok. Don’t be surprised if you get a lot of calls from United Airline employees, we put the literature in the travel folder and have mentioned the trip to many of our friends there.

The Don Carlos Hotel was very nice. We really enjoyed our stay there. The staff was extremely helpful. We did go to Pueblo center for an evening--what fun!

Alex, our guide for the white water trip was wonderful! He and the driver, I think his name was Miguel, and Lil were so much fun. Miguel helped me keep up with my stuff without a problem.

The Hotel Paradisus Playa Conchal was awesome. The food was excellent and the staff was very helpful. Although we did not catch any Marlin or Sailfish, our day of fishing was a lot of fun. We did catch a yellow tail, a red snapper and an amber jack.

This trip went beyond our expectations.

Your country is truly beautiful. There are other things we would like to do so we will have to do a return trip.

All of the people (Ricas) we talked to and met were so friendly.

The Pacuare Lodge is absolutely beautiful. The grounds were stunning, and you thought of everything to make our stay comfortable – from umbrellas to candles and flashlights in the room to backgammon at the lodge. Kurt’s tour was fabulous + we learned about walking trees, hallucinogenic tea (angel trumpet) and more! The food was great as well. We felt very pampered when we expected to be “roughing it”. Carlos also was such a great guide – we felt safe yet adventurous at the same time! Nice back trip off the cliff, by the way – very impressive! Both of these trips were awesome, the rapids were never-ending on the Pacuare and the jungle surroundings whisked us away to another world. Paulo manned our raft and went out of his way to "surprise us" with waterfalls and great photo ops with our waterproof, he really went the extra mile to ensure a great trip on the Pacuare. We requested him again for the treasures tour and again we had a splendid time. We requested duckies at his suggestion and were overjoyed with the experience. Being beginner kayakers we weren't quite ready for our normal kayaks but duckies make the Sarapiqui much more fun for us (boosting our moral maybe too). Again Paulo was an excellent guide and we even got to see a poisonous frog, toucans and monkeys! A great way to end our wonderful trip to Costa Rica ! Pura Vida!

I would like to express my sincere thanks for your invitation to the Pacuare Lodge overnight trip.

I figured we would have a good time, but I honestly didn’t expect the attention to detail and professionalism of your 2-day overnight adventure. The trip down the Pacuare is always spectacular: verdant hillsides away from the “civilization” make a striking contrast for the tumbling freshwater cascades that fill the river. That impressive backdrop coupled with heart-racing rapids makes for a memorable experience. But Carlos and Andres really made the trip unforgettable. Funny and good spirited, our knowledgeable guides took us down the river, told us jokes, and made us feel at home in your beautiful facilities. And the food: it’s amazing to have a five-star gourmet meal in the middle of the jungle.

Now back in San Jose , I can hardly wait to tell my friends about this adventure. We would like to tell our readers about your facilities but running a short article on your lodge in a future edition, with your permission.

And I can hardly wait to get back into the wild to really experience Costa Rica .

Good morning Gretchen. Just a wee note to say we had a terrific time! The adventure pkg. was just that including the 4x4ing over the 'goat path'roads to get to some of the locations. The lodges, especially

those in the jungle were spectacular - lush, romantic and exotic. Indeed, all the arrangements made by you were first class. My wife and I both found Costa Rica to be a wonderful and beautiful country. We have traveled all over the world and without question our rafting/hiking/kayaking adventure in Costa Rica rates right up at the top of our list. The Pacuare river rafting was exceptional- it clearly is one of the great white water rafting trips. We will definitely return one day. Again, thanks for all your assistance. Dear Ana and Roberto: Thank you so much for inviting me to rafting and staying at Pacuare Lodge. I had a great time! It's really good that the other tour didn't work out because I don't think just seeing the pictures would give me the full idea of what a lovely place the lodge is. I think it would be just perfect for a Sierra Club group. I found it so simple but beautiful and very comfortable. I loved the natural feeling, the way the cabins are so spread out for a feeling of privacy and minimal impact on the environment. The whole project was obviously designed with much thought and care. I can't say enough in praise and commendation about Kevin as our head guide. The river was higher than I'd seen it before so I was happy to be with such a competent boatman. He is a top rate professional in every aspect of that demanding job.

It was good to meet you and I hope we will be able to schedule some groups to you as we develop our schedule for 2004.

Hola! Had a great trip. Everything was perfect--from your hotel recommendation to the good weather. No rain, but then a big storm blew in the second that we hit the take-out point. How'd you do that? Talk about perfect planning!

Manfred, Mac, Gerardo, Jose--and the rest of the crew were all very competent and a lot of fun. I am not real fond of heights, but Mac and Gerardo were so good at what they do that I trusted them completely on the canopy tour and had a blast. The hike to see the Cabecars with Manfred was tough but very worthwhile. I will never forget it. The rapids were great fun and exciting. The lodge area was wonderful and very well-tended. The food was great, the bungalows very nice. I suppose that you hear this stuff all the time. I'll be back. Next time I'm bringing a date, though. It was too good to do alone.

This will be one of the highlights of our trip! Your personnel were all wonderful. Thoughtful, funny and thorough. I was in awe of the grounds and the atmosphere of the lodge. I will long remember the romantic room with the candles and the sweet smelling flowers. The food was outstanding! The river trip itself was exhilarating! I loved all the rapids! This was a trip full of wonderful memories + new friends that I will treasure forever.

This was a highlight of my life! I have participated in about 40 rafting trips including the Grand Canyon and this was among the very best! Quite a change from desert canyon country! The guides were excellent. Jose is an outstanding boatsman but not to good at soccer, (ha-ha). Also I loved the canopy tour. Thanks so much!
